From Julie: When Paul and I first got the idea to do this project, I searched around online to see what information was already available for how to get more views on YouTube. Most of what I found pertained to how to present your content: I found people outlining video styles and genres, giving advice for how to plan your video content, how to come up with the clever ideas, etc.

And I thought, “Yeah, well, that’s the obvious stuff. I mean, you can almost look around at what videos are popular on any given day and get it what you might want to do to attract attention.”

Let’s see, videos that tend to do well in terms of of views or going viral are:

  • funny
  • strange
  • shocking
  • inspirational
  • fascinating or compelling
  • instructional or demonstrative – basically “how to” videos always do well
  • gross
  • and, of course, sexy or risqué

Yet, here’s the thing: No matter how valuable your content might be, or how hilarious, shocking, inspirational, what-have-you, in order for that video to even have a CHANCE to go viral, people have to find your content in the first place!

You need to get your YouTube videos optimized and indexed FIRST so that you even stand a chance to grab your target audience’s attention and turn it your way.

So, how do you drive that traffic? What are some guerilla marketing techniques to get those initial views on your YouTube videos in the first place? Those are the strategies we cover in YouTube Secret Weapon.
