Thanks - we certainly appreciate the shout out.
  • Hi Stan - Thanks for your question, and I'm happy to hear you've checked out the book! What I was referring to in that section, point number 7 specifically, is what YouTube refers to as CTA ads (Call-To-Action ads)... And yes, these are different from YouTube Annotations (covered in point number 2 -- these are the interactive comments you can add to your videos that can be set to link to other YouTube content).

CTA ads are the semi-transparent pop-up overlays that you see at the bottom 1/4 of a video, and they will allow viewers to click and sail directly over to an external domain. In order to run a CTA ad, you must first have an account with Google Adwords and have a credit card on file there. Next, you must be running a Promoted Video (formerly known as Sponsored video ads, these are part of YouTube's pay-per-click, or pay-per-view program). You can set that up at https://ads.YouTube.com -- and here's a hint: you can run one of these ads for only a penny a click so it won't require much of a budget at all (unless you want it to). Once such an ad is running, you will find the opportunity to run a CTA ad on each promoted video you are running. You will find this feature has been turned on when you go to the My Video section and click on that video to edit it -- it will be on the right beneath the video player in edit mode.

In YouTube Secret Weapon 2.0 we show you how to do all of this and include tips for maximizing your click-through rate -- whether from the promoted video when it shows up in the YouTube SERPs or from the video itself and the CTA ad you use to promote your off-set destination.

Thanks again for the question -- the annotations feature is easily confused with the CTA feature. YouTube has done a wonderful job of educating the YouTube community of the Annotations feature and how to use it, while the CTA opportunity is not widely known (but to me, is one of the greatest features a marketer can use to drive traffic, create a direct response call-out message to viewers, and even enhance your branding (look for the area to add a logo jpeg to your content, like you see in this BLASTmedia video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....

Best of luck to you, Stan!
  • Great chapter on YouTube in Social Media Marketing Superstars book!

You mentioned in the Seven Ways to Get Traffic, point 7: "you could run an overlay on your own video inviting viewers to click and sail right through to the corresponding website you're promoting." I'm familiar with the overlays that YouTube offers that will let you click thru to other YouTube videos, channels, but I wasn't aware of an overlay on the video display itself that would click thru to one's web site (external from YouTube). Is this feature now available?
