How to Embed High Quality & High Definition (HD) YouTube Videos Into Blogs and Websites

by Julie Perry on January 21, 2009

The topic of this post and the video tutorial below is video embeds.

More specifically, the video below deals with how to obtain high-quality or high-definition (HD) playback of YouTube videos when they are embedded on blogs or websites outside of YouTube.

Note: I do go off on a tangent (shocker!) in this video in order to cover several other very important tips to keep in mind when embedding your YouTube videos. (I see people doing these things WRONG all over the Web. It is not yet common knowledge how to do this stuff!)

So, also covered here are:

  • How to get rid of that recently added “Search” box that comes up in embedded YouTube videos. (The most recent annoying and distracting feature of YouTube embeds.)
  • How to keep the related videos from coming up when your video is finished. (Always been an annoying and distracting feature of YouTube embeds.)
  • Too, you’ll find a few additional tips with regard to the new customizable players for your video embeds and what to watch out for when using them.

All Aboard! This Video Tutorial from Julie Is Content-PACKED:

The video above is embedded in the high-quality version. To see the results of
the before and after for the examples shown in the tutorial, please scroll down.

THE CODE

As mentioned in the video above, to get the videos to embed in these playback formats, the following code is necessary:

High Quality: &ap=%2526fmt%3D18

High Definition: &ap=%2526fmt%3D22

THE RESULTS

You’ll see the difference between the Before & After versions here below.

First, the high quality.

High Quality Before:

High Quality After:

Note
:
For people with slower or NON high-speed Internet connections, these high quality and HD videos may take longer to load and therefore could play slower or choppier. This is especially true of the “Where the Hell Is Matt (2008)” HD videos below.

Please be aware of this when embedding these on your own blog or website — it may make the viewing experience more difficult for some of your visitors. (And if you are having a problem getting these videos to play here, that is why.)

HD Before (with Related Videos Showing Up):

HD After (with Related Videos Showing Up):

** Another Tip: When viewing videos ON YouTube (not off-site), you may now change your account settings to always play either the high quality or HD versions of videos if/when they are available.

To do so, when logged in, simply go to Account ==> Playback Quality Settings, and then choose the default setting for viewing videos:
a) change dynamically based on the current connection speed
b) never play higher-quality video (for low-speed connections)
c) always play higher-quality video when it’s available (for higher-speed connections)

And with that, I look forward to seeing everyone’s videos now embedded in high quality or HD (if you prefer; again, please note the downside of it possibly being a more frustrating viewing experience for your audiences) and WITHOUT that pesky “Search” videos box popping up whenever I hover of the player with my mouse.

Embed away!
